If you work in the shipping industry or adjacent to the business, you will see shipping containers everywhere, like we do. You drive the highway, you will see all trucks carrying a shipping container, or a train passing by, sitting in someone’s yard, you will look for the codes, what size is it, if it looks nice or not and so on. You will get a shipping container “tattoo” on your retina or your eyes will detect them everywhere. Besides seeing them around you, you will notice some movies, tv series, music videos or games include them in their scenes. We have put up a list with a few most interesting scenes and videos that include shipping containers or yards in their set.
We are going to have a lost of movies that you can see shipping containers or has scenes of the plot filmed in a container yard for real or CGI will take over. Either way we love them!
– Iron Man 3 – One of the best CGI and special effects movie, with lots of ships blowing up and planes falling out of the sky. You don’t know is that many of the shots were filmed at the port of Wilmington, where the whole production team had to get special passes form the USDHS ( U.S. Department of Homeland Security ) in order to have access on the docs and facility. The scene where the President boarded Air Force One also was shot at Wilmington Airport and the scene where Iron Man is catching falling passengers was shot over Oak Island, in the same area.
– Spider Man: Homecoming – After a battle with the Vulture, Spiderman is accidentally locked in onto one of the trucks headed to Tony Stark’s Damage Control Vault with his new suit. When he wakes up, he he needs to find a way to entertain himself till the doors will open again in the morning, he hangs out among some cool futuristic looking shipping containers as he explores his suit’s powers.
– Deadpool – The final fight scene of the movie takes place at a scrapyard full of shipping containers, which only serve as background for most of the battle. When an explosion causes a huge ship to tip, is making the containers on board to slide in all different directions making them extra obstacles in the fight.
– Batman Begins – Going to the other universe, DC, the iconic first appearance of Batman 17 years ago takes place as Falcone and his men conduct their usual business at a shipping container yard. A few punches and guns blazing in the air, while Batman is taking them one by one. Such a cool scene when you think where it was filmed.
– Step Up Revolution – The third movie in the Step Up series, takes place in Miami, Florida, very close to the Port of Miami. In the movie, the dance crew protests because of the destruction of their beloved neighborhood in the way they know best – by dancing. The dance scene takes place with piles of containers as their backdrop and stage. A really cool idea and dance as well!
– Captain Phillips – Who said that the pirates don’t exist in the modern days? The movie came out just when marine pirating was peaking and large container ships, like the Maersk Alabama, the vessel that was referenced in the movie, can hold up to 11,000 containers. That many containers full of expensive cargo makes container ships appealing to pirates. Filming took place in Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. It was actually another Maersk vessel – Alexander Maersk – that was used in the movie which is identical to Maersk Alabama and was charted during the shooting. The production team also used the real crew of the ship where they got information from the crew when needed. The rescue part was shot at Virginia Beach and Lincoln, Massachusetts.
– Pacific Rim – When giant alien monsters emerge from the bottom of the ocean to destroy humanity, humankind builds massive robots to fight them back. The Si-Fi movie features a dramatic battle between the colossal Kaiju monsters and the human-made robots called Jaegers, which takes place at a port along the Pacific Rim. In the height of this battle, a Jaeger uses shipping containers to smash the head of the Kaiju. The humans here knew that containers are some of the strongest objects around, and therefore great assets in a fight. Interesting scene, too bad they destroy almost 80% of the container yard in the movie.
– Tron: Legacy – Most of the action of the movie takes place in a futuristic parallel world, having a glimpse in the future modern Earth. The main character, Sam Flynn, lives in a shipping container house, not fancy not modern or high end, that has been converted into his home and garage. We love to see this idea in the movies, knowing that nowadays is a trend in repurposing shipping containers and turn them into housing or businesses.
– Hanna – The movie follows Hanna, an assassin raised in the wilderness, in a journey to escape from being hunted down by the corrupted CIA. In one scene, Hanna got herself ambushed in the movie in a container park, at night. The shipping containers feature heavily in this section of the movie as props for Hanna to escape the bad guys, before she runs in between smaller stacked of the shipping containers to hide. She then jumps on top of the stacks to run away, using the containers being moved to eventually escape.
– RED – retired and extremely dangerous as Bruce Willis says it in the movie, the shipyard here serves as an interesting backdrop for this classic clip from RED. Intermodal containers are extremely durable, that’s why none of them are really damaged in this scene, in spite of the numerous explosions they witness. Thanks god they didn’t damage them so we can still have units to sell we could say.
– I, Robot – The final scene of the movie takes place among hundreds of containers, which look almost rudimentary in comparison with the robots and technology that exist in this future world. It serves as a testament to both the durability and the capability of today’s containers. Who knows how they would look in the future.
– Crazy Rich Asians – The Bachelor’s party in this movie, is held on an actual cargo ship, with shipping containers repurposed into a stage, private rooms, a basketball court, and swimming pools. The director explains that because the movie is set in Singapore, he decided to pay tribute to the numerous container ships waiting to come in or to go from Singapore, a significant attribute to Singapore’s economy.
