In an innovative twist on sustainable living, multidisciplinary practice Wiercinski-Studio has designed a remarkable portable cabin made from two steel shipping containers. This unique structure serves as both a remote living environment and an integrated workspace, perfectly suited to the post-pandemic era where flexibility and adaptability are paramount. Currently nestled within a community garden next to Szelagowski Park in Poznan, Poland, this cabin is designed to relocate easily to any forested area and, eventually, even to float on water.
The cabin’s construction showcases the potential of repurposing shipping containers into functional living spaces. The assembly process was impressively swift, with transport and on-site setup completed in just one day. Wiercinski-Studio strategically placed the cabin atop the roofs of existing containers used for storage in the garden, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Measuring 12 meters by 2.5 meters (39.4 ft by 8.2 ft) and standing 2.9 meters tall (9.5 ft), the cabin comprises 54 square meters (581 sq ft) of usable space. It includes a fully functional living room, kitchen, workspace, bedroom, and bathroom, all designed to meet the needs of modern living. The interior walls are insulated with spray foam and finished with birch plywood, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the cabin’s industrial exterior.
The cabin’s exterior is intentionally left raw, showcasing the thick trapezoidal sheet metal of the shipping containers. Painted a dim green, the façade allows the cabin to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings. This raw construction is complemented by external steel stairs and an arched balustrade on the terrace, adding to its unique charm.
All the furniture within the cabin, including the bench, table, and chair with a round backrest, are designed by Wiercinski-Studio. These pieces are not only stylish but also adaptable and mobile, ensuring the cabin and its furnishings can easily move with the owners as their needs and locations change.
